Dance Movement Therapy – Maurice's Progress

Maurice & Kofi @ Emancipation Park - Kingston

Working with Maurice over the past six months in Dance Movement Therapy has been a deeply rewarding journey, one that consistently reaffirms why I do what I do. Maurice, wheelchair-bound due to a spinal deformity, has shown remarkable strides in his ability to walk and increase his range of motion. With each session, I watch as his confidence grows, and his small but significant efforts inspire me to keep pushing forward.

One of the most touching aspects of our work together is Maurice's response after each session. It’s not just his progress in movement that motivates me, but his genuine concern for me as a person. He always asks, “Are you ok?” after each session. This simple question, filled with empathy, makes me pause and reflect on the positive exchange we share. While I am there to guide him, Maurice’s question reminds me that the therapeutic relationship is a two-way street, where both of us are learning, growing, and caring for one another.

Maurice’s mom has also been a pillar of resilience, placing trust in the process and in me. Her unwavering support for her son’s progress is a testament to the power of partnership in this work. Together, we are witnessing the joy of small progresses—the little victories in his movements, the moments where he pushes himself just a little bit further.

What started as a therapy program has blossomed into something far more meaningful—a connection that goes beyond movement and physical therapy. Maurice’s continual concern for my well-being reminds me that, in this journey, it’s not just about his progress—it’s about mutual care, trust, and the shared humanity that makes this work so special. So, yes, Maurice, I’m ok, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to walk this path with you.
