Priyakshi Agarwal

Priyakshi will be arriving in Jamaica on July 11th, 2021 to pursue her research paper in Dance-hall. Looking at similarities between Indian Dance Forms and the Jamaican Dance-Hall and its empowerment to women throughout Jamaica and the diasporas.

Priyakshi hopes to engage a number of pioneers and leaders in Jamaican dance theatre as well as performing artists relevant to her research. She has reached out to Scholars in dance such as Dr. L’Antoinette Stines of L’Acadco Dance Company, Dr. Maria Hitchins (Former JCDC Dance Specialist) who has documented our traditional folk dance and culture among others. She hopes to work with Edna Manley College including a number of schools and community groups while here, to share and gain knowledge of both dance cultures.

Priyakshi Agarwal is trained in the Indian classical dance Bharatanatyam and Kalaripayattu, a form of martial arts from India. she also practices Chenda (Percussion from Kerala), Aerial, Theatre, Chhau, Ghoomar, terah taal, Garba and several other folk dance forms of India.

She learnt Bharatanatyam from Guru Maheshwari Nagrajan. She has been working with Dr Mallika Sarabhai from 2016 participating in many dance and theatre productions; such as Mother River, Kadak Badshahi 2.0. She played multiple roles at Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, Ahmedabad. She also has a master degree in the field of Marketing.

At age 16 her rebelliousness and passion for performing caused her to leave home to learn dance. Priyakshi call herself a “Feminist killjoy”. Her ultimate goal in life is to give back to society, using her gift as a dance artist. She has been engaged in many social projects that include teaching dance to disenfranchised children, performing for orphanages and old age are among them.

Priyakshi is from a small village in Rajasthan (formerly known as Rajputana) in India where dancing is frowned upon and considered a major sin. She has had a very tough time in making her society understand about her passion. However, making this journey to Jamaica will certainly give her even more recognition and acknowledgement for staying true to her calling.
